Understanding the NDIS: A Guide for New Participants

Starting your journey with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time navigating government supports. This guide is designed to make the process clearer by explaining what the NDIS is, how you can access it, and what you need to do to get started.

The NDIS is a national scheme that provides funding to individuals with permanent and significant disabilities. It aims to support people in achieving their goals and increasing their independence. To access the NDIS, you’ll need to meet eligibility criteria related to age, residency, and the impact of your disability on your daily life.

Once approved, you’ll be invited to a planning meeting with a Local Area Coordinator or NDIS Planner. This is your opportunity to talk about your needs, current supports, and future goals. It helps to be prepared—bring notes, reports, and think about what’s working and what could be improved in your daily life.

At Empowering Connection, we walk alongside you every step of the way. We help participants prepare for their planning meetings, understand what they’re entitled to, and connect with services that fit their lives. Through our Connect + Thrive framework, we ensure that your plan becomes a tool for independence, inclusion, and community engagement.
